3 fish caught on the Flesk river.
(REPORT OF BILLY DOWNES, CLUB SECRETARY) The week has been slow as one would expect with the Draft Nets in operation. This writer had one of the few salmon caught in Laune Anglers waters for the week and it was one of only two fish caught at Johnston's on Thursday the 13th. This stretch was fished by about twenty rods for the day. Members of Laune Anglers are very disappointed with the Minister's decision to extend the season for the Draft Nets.
Fishing over the weekend was poor a combination of high coloured water on Saturday and the Draft Nets blamed. There were four fish reported from Beat 3. With the lovely water and ending of the Draft Net extension on Friday 14th prospects for the next few weeks should be good but it still means in effect a five week angling season in 2009.

Fisheries Awareness Week is an initiative created by the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards as part of their commitment to train and educate young people throughout the country in the skills pleasure associated with angling. As part of this programme Mike Hennessy from the South Western Regional Fisheries Board joined Kevin Murphy and John Roscoe of the Bellavista Hotel in Cobh and ran the first angling event in the South West this year.
A youth group from Farranree in Cork city under the supervision of Noel and Paddy and another youth group from Cobh and their supervisor Aoife jointly fished both from the shore and from the boat on Saturday 29th August during a break in the horrendous weather this week has experienced. Nine youths managed to catch 8 fish from the Deepwater Quay. Ten times that amount were caught from the Kevin Murphy’s boat further out in the harbour. Angling Awareness Week will run from 29th of August to 5th of September nationally so watch for events taking place in your local area.
