Anglers fishing Laune Salmon & Trout Anglers’ Association waters for the last two weeks of the season had to cope with really high water levels which favoured fisheries upriver of the tributaries. “If only we got this water in August’’ was the daily anglers’ lament to be heard.
Friday’s night’s deluge meant that waters downriver of the river’s tributaries were unfishable on Saturday morning, September 30, the last day of the season. However when the early-morning raging flood water running off the Giddach and Gweestion Rivers relented somewhat in the afternoon, the river became fishable. One angler who took advantage of the improved conditions was Tralee teenager Sinead Downes, who landed a 5 lbs. fresh salmon on a worm on the Johnston Fishery without help or advice from her friends.
Former Laune Anglers chairman Tom O’Reilly made his first appearance of the season on the second last day of the season and was rewarded with a freshly-run salmon of 8.5 lbs.
